Ep 152: Scott Brennan, Life on Mars (US), Kath & Kim (US)

The delightful and talented Scott Brennan joins us in the studio to raise the tone and tell us about his time in TV sketch comedy and the world of advertising voice-overs. We also take a look at US remakes of two shows that were very successful in their home markets. There’s some special and exciting Letters to Boxcutters and the results of last week’s Quiz.

  1. What’s the deal with podtrac… it took me about 4 1/2 min to direct download rather than the usual 30-50sec.

    Anyone else find it slow?

took me about 1-2 mins mobo. since moving to melbourne my broadband speed has gone to hell πŸ™‚

Great episode guys! was walking around listening and laughing out loud πŸ™‚

I started listening at episode 24 (with the infamous beep-boop-beep-boop) after hearing josh on jjj talking about downloading tv and have been loving you guys ever since πŸ™‚

John I love your fresh (dirty) input πŸ™‚

I still miss ross but I gotta say boxcutters has been getting better with every episode in the 2+ years I’ve been listening!

  3. How totally cool was the special letter to boxcutters this week? I won’t say too much about it for those who haven’t listened yet but it has made me love Middleman even more. I’ve had a a scout around and it isn’t available yet on DVD – Amazon doesn’t have a listing for it so we may not see it before Christmas. They usually have stuff available for pre-order for at least 4-8 weeks but nothing yet.

Great episode again, although I was half expecting Syd James to pop in a couple of times. Cheers also for the quiz win. Ted was on the most recent dancing with the stars USA, apparently.

In the spirit of Brett’s Kate Ritchie leaving Home and Away news, I believe that Brett reported on this one some months ago:

And John, you asked for it (safe for work, mostly):

I’ve just stumbled upon a cracker of a show on abc2 at 9:30 thurs nights.
It’s called “Review”and basically it’s a show where a rich, pretentious, overly verbose arts critic type guy called Myles reviews basic life stuff. Like in this episode he reviews “stealing”where he starts with stealing a comb and then escalates his thievery before giving stealing 3 stars πŸ™‚
He then reviews “dickhead mates””running out your partner in cricket” (one star) and “being a bushranger”

It’s Australian comedy and I’m really enjoying it and am glad I stumbled across it. So check it out.

  6. Alex,

It’s repeated Friday Nights on ABC1 (late night). I watched it – wasn’t very impressed.

Mike, Well I admit I haven’t adhered to the law of 3 and I admit that I posted after only watching a bit of an episode but the 2/3rds of 1 episode I saw was pretty funny aus comedy πŸ™‚ I must admit I did think “one joke pony” a few times while I was watching but then so is hollowmen and I still dig that πŸ™‚
“Review” made me laugh out loud a few times during the ep that I saw which is more than I can say of most aussie comedies recently πŸ™‚

I’m an optimist and always hope for the best from aus shows….except for the wedge….that sucked arse…..and ronnie johns….trying so hard to be “off the wall” comedy it ended up in the back garden. Very small business is piss funny though.

  8. Well, I can tell if I will like something in the first 15 minutes usually, except 24 which took some time to get into.

The Wedge, Ronnie Johns, That SBS Bogan Show, Mark Loves Sharon… any bogan comedy all suck.

  9. Hey,

This seems like something that the boxcutters family would be into.

    http://www.abc.net.au/corp/haveyoursay/

They are after opinions that they will probably ignore about digital media / new technology, the ABC future etc

I caught about 15 minutes of Review With Myles Barlow the other night: my first thought was it smacked a little of Brass Eye because, coming into it halfway through the ep, it seemed they were trying to pass it off as factual; as I watched more it felt like Real Stories. I won’t be watching it again.

  11. Oh, I don’t think I said thanks for the Crumpler bag – so thanks!

BTW, can we have more advice from the Butt Dr? I’m having a bad case of the runs today.
