Ep 265: Game of Thrones, Freaks and Geeks

Gameofthrones

We review the HBO series Game of Thrones.

In Good Die Young we look at Freaks and Geeks.

Our cohost this week is copywriter and man-about-town, Glenn Peters.

  1. Good episode guys and nice to have Glenn in. Two things I thought you might like:

Pop My Culture did an episode that had a panel of some of the Freaks and Geeks cast. Worth a listen, though it lacks the discipline and presenting experience of Boxcutters (truly).

This chart helps to map out some of the impenetrable relationships in Game of Thrones. Yes, it is a fantasy daytime soap and I love it!

  2. A “trotters” trotter: Macho Man was a colour commentator for about eight months between 1991-1992 due to a “retirement” storyline. You’re probably mistaking him for the equally flambouyantly dressed Jesse “The Body” Ventura who was a commentator for a significant amount of the late eighties WWF product.

Have to completely disagree with Mr. Peters regarding “selling” Game of Thrones to women. He’s completely disregarded the female fantasy reading fanbase, like my wife, who did not need to be sold on the series by myself. I’d be intriguedd to see what the boobs per minute ratio for Game of Thrones is compared to Deadwood & Rome.

  3. Actually, my head nearly exploded with all the innacuracies from that Randy “Macho Man: Savage tribute. It’s nice having Toby there to fact check during the episode, but for Josh particularly would it kill you to look up stuff beforehand? Not that it matters whether Randy was a commentator ‘for all those years’, or never actually was at the first Wrsetlemania, or (etc etc), but as a listener it’s really quite jarring when you get it wrong and the jump all over Brett trying to correct you. Completely avoidable, too…

For Toby; if you haven’t read it yet, read the fabulous William Goldman book “Which lie did I tell” which includes some good Andre the Giant stories – for example, my opinion of Mandy Patinkin (“Inigo”) went through the roof when I read how he slapped the s#^t out of Andre – what balls! – in on order to get him to stop ‘wrestling-acting’, and start ‘acting-acting’.

    • Josh Kinal says:

@MordWa You make a good point. I did no research into this item. None. Zero. Zilch. Jumping all over Brett when he’s trying to correct me is fun. You should try it some time.

That being said, I’m sorry I made your head almost explode. I remember hearing “Macho Man” commentate but that must have been when, as Leechboy points out, he went through a “retirement” storyline and I just retrofit it into my memories of earlier wrestling days.

I apologise to all who may have taken offence. In the words of Rick Flair: “Wooooooooooooo”.

  4. @Josh.

Ehh, I don’t mean to come down on you like a ton of bricks; I have no objection to vague recollections/ gut feelings or the like being said – especially if it’s just something that comes up ‘just in passing during an episode’. But shouldn’t the news segment – and an obit, at that – be where you have the opportunity to research, fact-check, or otherwise get it right? Or is Teh Boxcutters News sponsored by Rupert Murdoch?
    (OOh – burn!)

    *ahem*

Again – it’s nothing personal, and please – I still love the show.

  5. I haven’t seen Game of Thrones yet, but I love the book series that it’s based on. However, the boob issue brings up the fact that female sci-fi and fantasy fans are always discounted. ‘Point of view’ characters are almost never female: depending on genre, women are either leather-clad dominatrix-types, vaguely offensive warrior princesses, or saucy wenches.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with saucy wenches. Boobs, as we all know, are awesome. However, it is a bit frustrating when all female characters turn into teen-boy masturbation fantasies, especially given the wealth of strong female characters in written sci-fi and fantasy.
    Sigh.

  6. Shadowrun!!!!
