Ep 288: The Light Side of 2011

Whether you’re celebrating the first night of Chanukah or just counting down the days ’til Chinese New Year, have we got an episode for you.
Almost everybody crams into the studio to talk about the television highlights of 2011.

We’re not concentrating on the bad stuff. We do that all year ’round. Nope, this is just the stuff we enjoyed so maybe you can enjoy it too.

It’s hopefully less messy than our previous end of year shows, but who knows?

Sit back and listen to Dave Lawson, John Richards, Glenn Peters, Brett Cropley and me talk until we get bored and go home.

You May Have Missed

Glenn really just sped past this one so you might have missed him mentioning Appropriate Adult in his highlights for the year.

  1. Can’t wait for the video podcast to be put up so I can watch Glenn wrest the microphone out of Dave’s hands to utter “Andrew Ettingshausen”, before handing it back. .

  2. Hey guys. Thanks for a great 2011 of Boxcutters. Here are my fave shows for the year (these include shows I watched in 2011, whether or not they actually aired in 2011).
1.Twentysomething. Absolutely hilarious and refreshing. I LOVED this show. Jess is the best female comedic character since Liz Lemon, and better than most- ever. I’ve watched the final ep several times and have laughed out loud each time.
2.Sons of Anarchy (seasons 1-4) While clearly imperfect (borders on melodrama at times), this show still sucked me in. I’m also always up for some gratuitous violence.
3.Game of Thrones. Speaking of gratuitous violence … Dispensable central characters up the ante.
4.Friday Night Lights (seasons 1-4) I had not heard of this show before discovering Boxcutters this year. I don’t agree with Josh that it should have finished after season 1, but I do agree that season 1 was perfect. Tim Riggins was out-of-the-box gorgeous, I literally felt like I fell in love with him through the screen (I giggled like a school girl whenever he was in the shot).
5.The Real Housewives of New York City (season 3-4) and Beverly Hills (seasons 1-2) (respectively). These shows made me gasp, laugh and shake my head time and time again. Seeing Alison Du Bois go crazy was a revelation. Any girl who got caught up in thrust and parry of (private) high school cliques would relate to these shows.
6.Homeland. A few plot holes did not irreparably undermine the overall quality of this show. I could feel Claire Danes fall in love with Brody, such was the quality of her performance. How great is it that movie stars are now on the small screen!
7.Nurse Jackie (season 2). I love a good story of transgression and Eddie Falco is superb.
8.Dexter (season 5). Probably the best season of the franchise thus far. Very moving.
    Bring on 2012 … Cheers.

  3. Happy New Year to all the Boxcutters – those of you in the studio and those of you playing along at home, in the car, on public transport, etc.

Thanks for another fantastic year of podcasts and introductions to some great shows (The Almighty Johnsons was my #1 this year ). Here’s to an even better 2012!

  4. For John, specifically, but anyone interested in an eerily accurate super nintendo parody version of Battlestar Galactica – and who isn’t – check out:
