The Glass House comes tumbling down

This was posted yesterday on Wil Anderson’s blog:

Before you read it in the papers over the next couple of the days, I just wanted you guys to know that the ABC have decided the final ever episode of the Glass House will go to air November 29.

This decision was made some time ago so it can’t be blamed on the whole “ABC Bias” kerfuffle that’s been around recently.

I’ve remained fairly ambivalent about the show. Some shows would be killer and some would just die in the arse. Still, I’d sit and watch it to kill half an hour and I think it will be missed because it was a rare combination of political opinion and comedy.

What’s been your take on the GH for the past 5 years?

  1. Man, that sucks…. I’m a big fan of the glasshouse….. I’ll admit Wil’s Howard bashing (no matter how much I believe it) does grate sometimes, but Hughsey has been gold, and I think Corrine does a great job (even if her monologue is edited – I’ve seen her do a few takes!) — I’ll miss the show, and you’re right, it does kill 1/2 an hour nicely. That’s a bummer….. wonder where the three of them will pop up next…..

(Oh but thankfully no more Georgie Parker…… or was she the kiss of death?)

  2. Just because the decision was made before the new-right doctrine version of the ABC was announced doesn’t mean it wasn’t axed on bias grounds. The Glasshouse was definitely one of the most common shows to stand up from behind the parapet – it’s almost a surprise it survived as long as it did.

Wil’s little rant at the end of the show a couple of weeks ago was one of the most simple and logical responses to allegations of bias I’d heard – if the Libs don’t want to be examined or targeted by shows on the ABC, get out of government… then it’ll be time for the ALP to cop it.

Funny? Sometimes. Some guests were just dull but thought they were much funnier than all that and Georgie Parker was just an embarassment to herself and anyone watching.

I don’t think The Glass House is “a rare combination of political opinion and comedy” – that’s largely Wil. I think it’s more like A Very Funny Comedy Programme That Isn’t A Sketch Show Or Sitcom, and it owes much of its success to its predecessor Good News Week (God, I miss that show [when it was on the ABC, not when it was on Channel Ten – that can go f**k off]). Here’s to hoping The Glass House‘ll put out a good ‘best of’ DVD.

And I agree re Georgie Parker: she’s only alright if she’s saying words someone else has written for her!

  4. If the glass house goes, where does that leave the Chaser ?

  5. ABC are saying The Chaser will stay as ‘satire’ isn’t covered by the new anti-bias rules. We’ll see……

GNW is an intersting thing too, I’m betting someone – probably ratings desperate 9 – will have a crack at buying the talent and doing the glasshouse on 9, my money is on it failing dismally, ala commercial-gnw

  6. Here’s the teaser line from the Crikey non-subscriber mail today:

Has the Liberal Party’s attack dog in the Senate, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, claimed her second ABC program with the news that the successful comedy/satire production, The Glass House, is not being renewed?

Oh, and I saw today there’s a Best Of… DVD due for release today.

Bugger me, yer right – it’s out tomorrow, along with Thank God You’re Here and volume 2 of The Chaser, which has this special feature:

350 minutes of unseen material (assuming you have never seen the show)

  8. Well that stuffs up my Wednesday night ABC marathon (although someone please save me from the IT Crowd in the hit-and-miss 9pm slot – ugh). How will I fill in a whole hour before The Movie Show now? Sometimes great, sometimes so-so, but I always tuned in for a bit of a laugh.

And more stuff here and here.

  10. It seems the IT Crowd is over – I’m sure I heard Absolutely Fabulous is on after Spicks n Specks this week. How dull… I put Ab Fab at about the same laugh level as Kath & Kim – way way way down…
