As you’ve probably heard by now, Boxcutters is presenting a night at ACMI where we’ll be discussing Press Gang and the Degrassi series as well as some other after school early 90s faves.
We want to hear from you. If you were a fan of these shows, if you were influenced by Lynda Day, Spike Thomson, Joey Jeremiah or Caitlin Ryan, then please send us a quick video of yourself telling us how these shows affected your life.
All we want is you talking to your computer. Quality is nowhere near as important as content. We’re putting together a web-sourced vox pop for the show at ACMI and we really want you to be a part of it.
If you have any questions you can contact us any time.
Don’t know what to say? Just answer some of these questions:
- Who was the character you most identified with?
- Did you want to be or actually believe you were this character?
- Did these programs change the way you behaved in real life? How?
- What did you think of the way romance and sex were portrayed in these shows?
Some quick answers to these questions and you’ll be helping us out a lot.
Thanks so much.
You can send us your file using free services DropSend or YouSendIt or you can just post it up on YouTube or our Facebook page and send us a link.

What about the brilliant Australian show… Heart Break High.
Was that inspired by the shows you are discussing?
Josh Kinal says:
We’re trying to get it all in, Pam. We really are. Four weeks to go and so much cramming. Heartbreak High was great. It launched many careers too. Thanks.

I’ll try to catch up with some of my friends from the early years of high school and pull together some video for you. For some reason we used to refer to each other by the names of Degrassi characters. Tragic, sad and weird beyond belief, but true.
I don’t know how this changed our lives but the psychological damage must have been immense. I was Claude, AKA the guy with a goatee who killed himself :/

I think that Press Gang (by way of Lynda Day) really solidified my love of intelligent women. Just about all of the male Press Gang fans that I know (including myself) related to Kenny – the quiet, mild-mannered “just friends” guy mostly content to be out of the spotlight.
I’m not sure how “influenced” I was by the show itself exactly (though being a fan of it affected my life immeasurably)… I will pass on your request to the Press Gang Mailing List, where I know there are some who have been strongly influenced by the show.
Are you after solely/mostly Australians?
Sophie says:
The best way anyone has ever described me to a potential date is “one part Spike, one part Wheels, one part AJ.”
My sister did her Master’s thesis on Degrassi, I’m sure I can wrangle up some people if you’re interested.
Amaranta says:
Hi, Sophie. I am also very interested in your sisters work. Do you think you can get me in touch with her?
Sophie says:
I said AJ, I of course meant Stephanie Kay. In my defence, it’s very late, and they do rhyme.
Josh Kinal says:
That’s quite the mix, SG. We’d love to speak to your sister if you can put her in touch. Also, anyone you can pass on to us for a bit of face-to-camera action would be wonderful. Thanks so much.
Angus Smallwood says:
I once impressed a girl by slaying a dragon for her.

p.s. I used to think that Alex P Keaton was my role model, but then I saw Colin Matthews. Anyone need a ping?
