Ep 295: Episodic Television & Nerds on TV

Ben McKenzie is a bonafide nerd who takes the label to an almost professional level. He talks to us about how the nerd is culturally represented on television with a particular focus on The Big Bang Theory.

TV ads are upsetting and confusing as we discover in I Don’t Buy It.

Then we have a discussion about the death of episodic television. Does everything have to be a long story? Whatever happened to just having everything wrapped up in a nice hour of television? We get to the bottom of it.

Pat Mastroianni played the celebrated Joey Jeremiah on the classic late-80s / early-90s Canadian teen drama, Degrassi Junior High (and its subsequent series). He joined us live via Skype to discuss his involvement in the series.

For the rest of the show, John and Josh (heretofore as ‘We’ or ‘Us’) talk through the intricacies and complexities of both Degrassi and the excellent UK teen drama, Press Gang.

This show was recorded live at ACMI in Studio 1 as part of their monthly Live in the Studio sessions. Every month, ACMI uses their own television studio to host a discussion of all things television and that’s an idea we can all get behind. It’s fun and informative.

Meanwhile, enjoy this display of in-depth discussion and frivolity. It goes for a little over 90 minutes, so strap in. Also, there’s a list of videos and links to those videos after the jump.

Press Gang Memories

Last week John and Josh hosted the sell-out session at ACMI all about Press Gang and Degrassi.

For those of you who missed out, we’ll be bringing you bits and pieces, leading up to playing the audio version in late March. The first of those is this video that we created out of the testimonials people sent in about their Press Gang influences.

Boxcutters, Degrassi, Press Gang and You

Picture from Press GangAs you’ve probably heard by now, Boxcutters is presenting a night at ACMI where we’ll be discussing Press Gang and the Degrassi series as well as some other after school early 90s faves.

We want to hear from you. If you were a fan of these shows, if you were influenced by Lynda Day, Spike Thomson, Joey Jeremiah or Caitlin Ryan, then please send us a quick video of yourself telling us how these shows affected your life.

All we want is you talking to your computer. Quality is nowhere near as important as content. We’re putting together a web-sourced vox pop for the show at ACMI and we really want you to be a part of it.

If you have any questions you can contact us any time.

Don’t know what to say? Just answer some of these questions:

  • Who was the character you most identified with?
  • Did you want to be or actually believe you were this character?
  • Did these programs change the way you behaved in real life? How?
  • What did you think of the way romance and sex were portrayed in these shows?

Some quick answers to these questions and you’ll be helping us out a lot.

Thanks so much.
