New Channel 9 logo…

Pretty uninspired if that’s it.

  1. Depends on how they use it, really – I’m guessing mostly 2D, as it’d look weird in 3D. I also predict their watermark could be more intrusive as a result of the change – we’ll see on Monday…

I expected the 9 to be inside a ball.

Well, it’s not a bad implementation – their new programme promos look a little Fox8-ish (I’m comparing from the bits and pieces I saw inbetween the That 70s Show marathon at a mate’s place at Christmas – I don’t have pay TV).

The watermark *is* a bit more intrusive – a lighter Nine in a darker box – but at least it’s not in the 4:3-safe area (at least here in Adelaide, where Nine’s owned by Southern Cross Broadcasting – I dunno what it’s like in the PBL-owned stations in the eastern states). The HD channel, which is on a demonstration loop, still sports the dots.

Nine’s usual huge 90-second promo with all their big celebrities will be shown just before the 6pm news – judging from the slideshow of behind-the-scenes stills, it looks as hilariously cringe-worthy as “One Big Family” from Frontline!

    See for yourself at channelnine.ninemsn.com.au.

Ooh, the HD channel just changed to The Young & The Restless, and there’s no watermark! Hopefully this will be permanent, and not just a techincal fuck-up.
I also notice there’s a new voice-over guy – I think he used to be on Channel Ten.
And what the fuck is with “this…..is Channel Nine”?

I maintain that the best of the logos (and certainly the most creativly utilised)is SBS, followed by the ABC. Nines new logo is pretty generic. However, given that nine has become the most generic of all the stations, I suppose it suites their purpose.

  6. Daniel G says:

Yeah, SBS and ABC do have great logos…probably because those stations aren’t numbered (Seven, Nine, Ten – even though ABC is usually called Channel Two).

I managed to record the 6pm premiere of the big promo I mentioned earlier – it’s the Nine personalities miming to a jazzy/big-band/swing version of “Still the One” (“We’ve been together since way back when / still, I just can’t wait to see you again…”), starting with Eddie and ending with Bert. It’s equal parts sophistication and embarrassment. I might upload it to RapidShare for the rest of you to laugh at! Personally, I’d love to hear them *actually* singing – that’d make for a great Christmas blooper tape!

  7. I haven’t seen the new 9 promo – if you want to mail it in, Daniel, we can host it here. Send it across to brett@boxcutters.net

If you want to be transported back 20 years, check out this quick clip. I assume this was the Melbourne specific version… It’s so very Tron.

Hey, Brett. I’ve uploaded the video to RapidShare, as the video is 15MB but attachments in Gmail can only go up to 10MB. It’s in VCD-quality MPEG-1 video, which means just about everybody should be able to see it. I’ve also cropped the digital 16:9 image to an analogue-friendly 14:9 (if you don’t know what I’m on about, don’t worry).

If you’re wondering who those three people at the :45 and :50 marks on the video are, the blonde woman in the middle is Adelaide’s weekend newsreader Georgina McGuinness, and she’s flanked by Adelaide’s weekday newsreaders either side (Rob Kelvin on the left and Kevin Crease on the right).

Anyway, feel free to pull it off RapidShare and put it on this site:

Note the download restrictions and click on the “Free” button.

Also, take a look at The Frankster Archives Library – there’s a higher-quality version of your video, as well as a host of other interesting audio and video archive clips.

Just looking at the logo over the last few days. Its an invitation to screen burn. Thats about as hard as you can get, there is virtually no trasparancy at all.
