Ep 312: John Clarke

John Clarke is, without hyperbole, one of the most important figures in Australian TV comedy.

His latest project was a documentary series about Australia’s great sporting history called Sporting Nation, which appeared on ABC1 as a lead-up to the Olympics to which the ABC doesn’t have rights.

He tells us all about The Games, Farnarkelling, and how he manages to get TV shows to actually go to air.

  1. Great interview! Well done Boxcutters!

Really interesting to hear him talk about the nuts and bolts of writing a TV show, and refreshing to hear someone talk frankly about the problems of the industry.

  2. Daniel D Boxcutter says:

I’m surprised that a deluge of comments has not yet descended upon this post congratulating the Boxcutters for putting this interview to air.

A hearty “well done” to all involved. Mr Clarke was entertaining, insightful and so amazingly candid. Please do more of this kind of “deep read” interview.

Or just bring back Craig McLachlan every now and then. That would be good too.

  3. You had me at that first “hmm” from John Clarke. Just hearing that made me smile.

“The doors opens and the episode walks in.”

    Great stuff.

I still remember his guest spot on Frontline, with Mike Moore mentioning that maybe he should try getting done up to look like the person he’s supposed to be.

I also find it hard to believe that John Clarke would have a hard time getting anything produced on television. Seriously, “Shopping Lists with John Clarke” could get up.

  4. Darren Boxcutter says:

    Great interview well done guys.

I think John Clarke should do a late news show like Graham Kennedy and Clive Robertson used to do.

  5. Excellent story full of candid truths almost now extinct anywhere in media. Loved his take on pirating stuff….so out there guy. Dying race but. thanks heaps.

  6. Hunchback Jack says:

What a fantastic interview. It was great to hear him talk not just about the great stuff he’d done over the years, but his views on what TV is, and how it should be.
I also have to commend you guys for sitting back and letting the man talk when he was taking a few attempts to articulate his ideas. So many interviewers interrupt to “help” the subject along. It was great to see your restraint in hanging back. Well done, guys.
