Episode 63: A reminder

Just a quick reminder for all those expecting to download an episode tonight or over the weekend.

We’re taking a break for this Thursday and will be back live on the air this Tuesday, 5 December. That’s right. From 7pm AEDT (that’s GMT +1100 for those who can do the maths) you will be able to listen to Boxcutters live on 3RRR.

The show will still be podcast for those who can’t get to a radio or maybe some of you have one of those special radios that only pick up the cricket.

Those of you who are not within range can still listen live on the web.

Go to http://rrr.org.au and click on “Stream” on the left hand side. Brett has mentioned an alternative to Real Player. Maybe he can help us out in the comments.

  1. You know. This has just cemented how attached I have become to the podcast. The idea of having to tune in at a specific time was / is a shock. viva le podcast.

    nibo the podcast junky.

  2. It’s a whole new world that’s about to open up with Boxcutters going live-to-air on Triple R and at the same time it’s going to be a revolutionary step for us as well – with some of the difficulties that revolution can bring with it. The podcast will continue over the summer – just posted on a different night – and then will return in the longer format, stronger and better, in February.

I used to be a bit of a Real devotee – when they were the pioneer of streaming media – but when the market started shifting to the Windows Media format, which was all free, they started trying to trick their users into paying for the player or, if they could find the hidden away link to the free player, trick them into signing up for premium content which was almost impossible to cancel once the free trial period had expired. Too much bad faith for me and I haven’t installed the player on any machine since the pre-v10, G2 player. When I worked a lot more in streaming media, a company I was contracting with bought a RealServer application at $14,000 for a 100 stream limited service – that was their revenue stream and it wasn’t vital that users pay anything.

So anyways, I’ve been using the JetAudio player for years, which handles Real files and streams. You can download the basic version at their web site (the Plus version isn’t required for Real media). The other popular Real content player is Real Alternative but it has an interface based on the old Windows Media Player (pre-v7) which I detest.

Once you’ve got a player set up, you can grab the direct Triple R stream link – http://rrr.org.au/player/rrr.ram – which comes down live at a smoking 32kbps.

If you’re not a local Melbourne listener, once you’ve got your player running, you might want to check what else is on-air. Check out the program guide through the link Josh posted above – most shows are specialised in the music or content they present so it helps to know when to tune in. Each of the presenters is passionate and expert in what they’re playing or talking about and it’s much more fulfilling to listen to than the standard commercial radio dross with wacky DJs shouting between songs they have no idea about.
