I saw the latest Hyundai ad last night and quite liked it. This morning, reading the paper over my Weeties, I find out my pleasure will be no more.

AUSTRALIA’S advertising watchdog has yanked a television ad for a car off the air after viewers voiced fears that it might encourage toddlers to jump behind the wheel of the family car.

The Advertising Standards Bureau yesterday told Hyundai to pull its “Next Generation” ad, which shows a toddler getting behind the wheel of a Santa Fe four-wheel-drive, putting on a seatbelt and picking up another child hitchhiking along the road.

The board said it had received more than 80 complaints about the ad. Several weeks ago, Hyundai had voluntarily moved it to a later time slot to appease viewers concerned about its effect on young children.

But the bureau said the ad did not comply with the code that governs vehicle advertising.

“The board certainly acknowledged that the notion of a toddler driving a car was unrealistic and fanciful, but under the (code of practice), fantasy cannot be used when it contradicts, circumvents or undermines the code,” bureau chief executive Mark Jeanes said. “Many of the complaints were from parents concerned that the advertisement would encourage copy-cat behaviour in young children and might lead to accidents.”

Hyundai spokesman Richard Power said yesterday that the company was disappointed with the ruling, but it would “not query the referee’s decision”.

“Hyundai maintains the ad is patently aimed at adults and its blatant fantasy is the foil for the literal liberties taken in the driving sequences,” he said.

It’s TV on the Internet: YouTube ads

If you’ve ever been to YouTube, you’d be familiar with the top right-hand corner of the home page, which is normally home to a paid video advertisement. Well, if you go there right now, it’s showing an ad for the movie Ghost Rider. But what’s this? It’s sporting that orange OFLC “this film has advertising approval” banner…and the Australian release date…and the website for the movie ending in .au – yep, this is an Australian(ish, considering it’s for a US movie) TV commercial!

I’m jumping to the conclusion that YouTube can now localise that ad spot. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the local ad, movie and TV industries: watch this space, indeed.

Reported in the Age today, PBL has brought Ch. 9 – the W.A. Flavour.

“The acquisition of Channel Nine Perth is a good strategic fit with the Nine Network Australia…”

I suppose when your hair is on fire, buying anything that starts with ‘Channel 9’ would be a good fit! πŸ˜‰

local content update

The Age reported yesterday that Channel 9 has “backed down” from using Outrageous Fortune as local content. It’s an interesting choice in rhetoric about 9 given they have always claimed they never needed Outrageous Fortune to reach their quota of local content.

(According to the artical the decision to show Outrageous Fortune as local content “angered Australian actors”. Well I guess that fits, actors are the most important people in the industry, if not the world)

Mind you The Age is also reporting that CBS is shooting a pilot based on David Lynch’s ‘Wild At Heart’. As fun and as short lived as that would be, the series is actually based on the twee British family drama of the same name about a vet who drags his family off to Africa which screened here on 10 recently. One of a very large number of British remakes on the cards, including Blackpool and Footballers Wives.

Channel 7 had a crushing victory last night, led by Heroes with a little over 2 mil nationally.

Very impressive figures. It will be very interesting to see how it goes once the immensely popular House returns on 10.

So channel 10 didn’t have the guts to run with Celebrity Joker Poker for another week or two. If you were watching on Tuesday night, you’ll have noticed the triple helping of Futurama…

Interesting looking at some of 10’s figures from last night: Futurama – 8:30pm 0.70 million, The Wedge 0.69 million, Rove 0.75 million – all of which didn’t get near: ABC News, The Simpsons, The Bill or Ten News (I’m not sure if that’s late news or afternoon bulletin). You’d think they got the feeling they were going to lose at least another 100k on Joker Poker to pull it and I’d be curious to see if it fit their demographic.

Having just caught the end of The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VI episode, with the segment where Homer goes 3D in Tron world and then gets sucked out into the real world, I was curious about where the Erotic Cakes shop was situated. Turns out it’s at 13567 Ventura Blvd – I assume that’s Hollywood, California.

Anyway, one of the pages that came up in the search results was IMDB’s Alternate Versions for The Simpsons. Many interesting differences in syndication and Australia and Canada there. But I’ve just been surprised by this note:

The DVD release of “The Complete First Season” has a slighty shorter version of the episode “The Telltale Head” than was originally telecast. Near the end of the network version of the episode when the mob is about to attack Bart and Homer, Bart makes a speech to the mob about “taking the town’s heritage for granted”, which finally convinces the mob to let them go. On the DVD release, however, this short speech is absent and it quickly jumps to the mob deciding to leave them alone — because it did not exist in the original reel of the episode that Groening and Brooks delivered to the Fox Network! The speech Bart made about the mob “taking the town’s heritage for granted” was the editorial creation of the network censors in compliance of the FCC‘s 1989 ruling that every serial animated television show transmitted include at least 28 seconds of educational content.

I’d never heard of this ruling before and I wonder if it still applies? This could provide hours of trainspotting entertainment in any number of cartoons. Where’s the education in Family Guy? Or American Dad? And is that why we have the regular, “I guess we all learned a lesson here today…” lines at the end of South Park? Now that I think of it, I can’t remember many educational seconds in Ren and Stimpy… unless Powdered Toast Man‘s speech about Vitamin F was actually true.

Fascinating.

So Kerry’s gone and Jamie couldn’t look after One-Tel without it crashing and burning hard – I thought Seven were gonna be in trouble again in 2006 but now… I’m not so sure.

Should be interesting times in TV land, people. Keep watching the skies.
